There was a mystical technology. An amazing format, universal, readable... It was called, you won't remember, .txt You could store books and tutorials, diaries, guides, pretty much whatever you could imagine. It could be read in any computer, any device, any operating system. You could do simple (and pretty cool!) ASCII graphics. And everything in just a few KB of disk space. This file is 3.556 bytes. BYTES. Do you remember 1.44 MB floppy disks? You could fit an small library in one of those! For the youngs, it was something like this: ###|###............#### ###|###......####..##### ###|###......####..###### ###|###......####..###### ###|###............###### ######################### ##_____________________## ##_Amazing program_____## ##___________v1.4______## ##_____________________## ##_____________________## ######################### And... It somehow disappeared? It's like we don't remember anymore. Now we get dizzy in convoluted software. We produce huge files that can hardly be read on many devices. We get lost in divs and h1s and strongs, or shot our words between a thousand format options, bolds and italics and all that garbage... But the thing is, it's still out there. And with #peakeverything, with internet getting more and more centralized, with everything getting DROWNED between a thousand cute cats and wars and ads (tons of ads!) and buttons and interactions anddddddd (I'm getting anxious) and all that! With everything drowned like that, it's getting harder and harder to have a reliable simple easy way of publishing info online, of compiling it and archiving. I'm, honestly, kinda scared for the world. And the heavy bandwidth streamings, the mountains of vital information fitted in long youtube videos, all that is not helping tackle climate change. So yeah, this is a small plea for you to focus again on just the content. Get down to write whatever you can, whatever you have to give to the world. Produce some content. Do not think too much about algorithms, about likes and retwits, about gamifications and followers and all that. Just, write something. Something touching, or useful, even just cute. And remember, try to make it easy to download, print, share. Make sure that no one is wasting precious bandwidth, that even with the worst connection your info can be accessed. Make sure that a screen reader will handle it pretty good. Make sure that some archiver (me?) could download and store that file forever, at pretty much no cost. And, well, then add .txt at the end of the filename. An .md if you are feeling fancy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- iris (iris@iris.eus / irisenebe@posteo.net)
